Just like old times with Alan Tudyk
Today was the Scifi Expo where Alan Tudyk would be the big guest and I got up early and along with my friend Jordan (who is a newbie to the whole Firefly thing), we trekked out to the convention center early to be at the front of the line.  We ran into the rest of the Firefly group while waiting in line.  I also had the chance to show my Firefly friends the picture I'd told them about - the one I had taken of Alan in Dallas the night before he left to go to Julliard in NYC.  Others in line overhead and so I got to 'show off' my rare photo of Alan before he became famous.  I had actually made a few spare copies, one of which I was going to give to Alan when I saw him.  One girl in the line actually wanted to take a photo of my photo - I kid you not.  Too bad I hadn't made a bunch of copies, I could have made some good extra money selling copies at the convention.

Once they opened the con doors, we headed over to get in line to wait for the autograph room to open to see Alan.  Again, people in line were impressed to see my 'rare Alan photo.'  I must admit it was kind of cool to be able to tell people anedotes about Alan's days with the improv troupe in Dallas called Rubber Chicken.  I was one of the troupe's "groupies" since I was dating one of the members of the troupe and was at most of their shows and parties during the time Alan was in the troupe.  But I had actually met Alan before he joined Rubber Chicken when he was in a play for a theater company that I worked for.  I did props for the show he was in and that was my first time seeing Alan's talents as a young actor out of college.  Anyway....I digress...Let's skip to where it was my turn in the line to go up to Alan to get his autograph.

I wasn't sure if he'd recognize me since my hair is different, both in color and style, from the old Rubber Chicken days, so I had prepared to give him some hints.  He stood up to say hi, then looked at me with a glint of recognition and I said "Think back to your Rubber Chicken days."  And then he pointed and said "Dennis!" - and we laughed.  It was pretty funny that he immediately made the connection by remembering who I was dating from the improv troupe.  Then I pulled out the picture and reminded him that I had taken it when we all went to a play the night before he left Dallas.  He was surprised and got a big kick out of the picture (it's on my Andiworld celeb page, BTW) and said he even remembered that night when we were all there.  Alas, I knew I couldn't stand there chatting forever since there was a ton of fans in the line. So after we said a few more quick things, I took a new photo with him, then we hugged and he said how great it was to see me and I let him get back to his signing.

Then we all headed over to the room where he would be doing his Q&A with the fans in a little while.  The room was packed (no surprise) and we had good seats towards the front.  Of course, everyone went crazy when he came in.  He was great with the fans, just as funny as he always used to be in person in the old days.  He got a lot of the usual questions about Firefly and Serenity and the inevitable question of why did Joss kill Wash off came up.
Alan said that before he got the Serenity script, Joss called him and told him to call him so they could 'talk about the script' when it was delivered, so he knew something was up.  Joss explained to him that in order to really raise the stacks in the final battle with the reavers, he had decided to kill off Wash in a totally unexpected and sudden way so that the audience would really be in suspense for the final battle - because, literally, if Wash could get killed, then anyone could die in that final battle with the reavers.  And Alan said that when he saw it onscreen, that Joss had been right, it really heightened the suspense of the final battle.  Plus, he says that if - and they have all talked about it - IF there is another movie (or even a reincarnated series someday) Joss has promised that both Wash and Book would be part of it.  And there is so much back story they could do, like during the actual war before the Browncoats lost, that he could easily do a prequel and include the 'deceased' characters.

Alan also had some great stories to tell about Nathan Fillion (in fact, he took pictures of all the fans with his camera phone because he said Nathan told him to bring back pictures)  I decided to ask him something that only I would probably know about him to ask (at least of the 'scifi' fans there) and I raised my hand.  He looked at me to call on me and then made this funny face like "Why are you raising your hand when I know you" and we both laughed.  He explained to the whole room that we knew each other and we used to hang out together when he was a member of the improv troupe back in his Dallas days.  I laughed and said it did feel kind of strange to be asking him a question but said that I would be good and not mention the parties or anything.  So I asked him, since he has such strong improv skills, if any of the directors he'd worked with had allowed him to improv much.  He talked a little about his days with Rubber Chicken and how what he learned in that group was what enabled him to give the audition that got him into Julliard.  He did say that Joss would never allow anyone to 'tinker' with his dialogue (which is understandable, since Joss writes brilliant and beautiful, very distinct 'languages' for his shows and characters) but Tim Minear had allowed Alan a little leeway at least once during an episode of Firefly and his adlib made it into the final cut.  He also said Betty Thomas (28 Days with Sandra Bullock) had really encouraged him to improv and used some of it in the film.

Of course, someone asked Alan to sing since many know he took over for Hank Azaria in Spamalot on Broadway.  Having heard Alan sing during the improvised songs they did in Rubber Chicken, I had to laugh about that.  And Alan did try to set the fans straight, that just because he starred in a Broadway musical does not mean he is a great singer.  But he is getting lots of offers for musicals now, despite his not being a real 'singer' - which he seems both amused and bemused by.  He even participated in a workshop of the musical Xanadu (musical theater folk will be familiar with the 'buzz' on it) where he was singing alongside a number of Tony winners and nominees and he felt very 'inadequate' vocally.  But despite his lack of vocal prowess, I doubt anyone of those Tony winners could hold a candle to his comedy and improv skills.

There was lots more he talked about in the session and I could take up a lot more blog space with it, but I would rather tell the best part of the whole day with Alan (and I'm sure it was the same for him)

The best surprise was that 2 of the other guys from the old improv group showed up to see Alan and, although he knew I was there, he had no idea that Richard and Shawn arrived after the Q&A to surprise him.  When the Q&A wrapped, we were leaving the room and here came Richard who had just arrived.  He had on his old Rubber Chicken shirt and had brought a few old 8 x 10s of the group.

We walked down to get in the line for Richard to get into the autograph room and then who walks up but Shawn!  I hadn't seen Shawn in almost as many years as Alan and it was great to see him and get to catch up with him.  Shawn and Alan have kept in touch all these years by phone and email, but he hadn't seen Shawn in ages.  Anyway, Shawn and Richard had to wait in the long autograph line to get into the room and we waited with them even though we'd already talked to Alan earlier.  I was dying to be there to see Alan's reaction when he saw them.  It seemed like we were waiting forever and the line was hardly moving, so Shawn thought he would try to call Alan on his cell to see if he could get the line 'guard' to let us into the room ahead of everyone else. Of course, Alan had his cell phone off while he was signing, so Shawn left him 2 very funny voice mails while we are standing in the line and everyone around us looked on in awe that this guy was actually calling Alan on his cellphone from the autograph line.  (I had forgotten how very funny Shawn could be in person, too, and it made me miss the old days watching them do their improv shows every night).

When we finally got into the room with the next autograph group, there was still a long line to Alan's table, so we went around to the other end of his autograph table away from the line, where Alan would see them when he looked up from signing autographs for those in line.  Sure enough, when he glanced up and caught sight of the guys, he jumped up and ran over to them, giving them both big hugs.  I snapped some great pics of Alan's face during the surprise - he was almost in tears!  We couldn't chat long since he had to get back to signing, but he told Shawn that after he finished at the con, he had to meet his parents for dinner but he would give Shawn a call and they might be able to meet up for a beer and some old times chat.  Then he gave us all goodbye hugs.  I was so thrilled to be there and be a part of that - I will certainly never have another convention experience like that.  Brian took pictures through the whole thing and I can't wait to see them all.  Even wilder, there were people in line who had no idea who we were, but they were all snapping pictures of this surprise moment with Alan.

I gave Shawn the other spare copy I had of the picture of Alan's 'last night in Dallas' and got his phone number so we can stay in touch.  And hopefully, Richard will be back more regularly with the Firefly group he founded (if he can get over Joss breaking his heart when he killed Wash in Serenity) so we will see him at the monthly shindigs again.

I will post pics from the con with Alan as soon as I have time and will also be updating my celeb page on Andiworld to include my now recent photos together with Alan.  This was just a really cool day to see an old friend who is having such great success and who is still just a nice, funny guy that appreciates the fans and the fact that he is just a working actor (who just did a film directed by Frank Oz...how terrific is that?)
